Intercessions

1st December 2024

Let us pray in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of God’s Holy Spirit.

Father in heaven as we begin this season of Advent help us to prepare our hearts and minds as we look towards the celebration of the birth of Your son Jesus Christ. We thank You that through prayer we can connect with Your grace, peace and love. Help us to cut away the distractions of daily life that prevent us from connecting with You. Help us to put Christ back into this Christmas season and help us to be constantly seeking Your presence and guidance.

O Lord of Advent - we pray for church leaders everywhere as they share the message of the Christmas story - a message of hope, love, reconciliation and redemption through the birth of Your Son Jesus. And we look to the time of Jesus’ return with hope and anticipation in our hearts. In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer we pray for the Province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan. This is a much troubled area with many refugees and displaced people. We pray that the churches in this area are able to enjoy a blessed Christmas and help those around them to know the peace and love of Christ.

O Lord of Advent - help us to love and protect this planet which we call home. We thank You for its wonderful riches and resources that enable us to provide ourselves with food, drink, clothes and somewhere to live. We pray for a fairer world where all have access to the necessities that they need for a safe, peaceful and healthy life. A place where everyone feels valued for who they are irrespective of race, skin colour or creed.

O Lord of Advent – we know that for some people Christmas is not a time of joy and celebration, but a reminder of loss and loneliness. As we go through the next few weeks and our excitement grows at the approach of Christmas help us to see the needs of those around us in a new and fresh way. Open our eyes to ways in which we can spread Your love through deeds of kindness - a small gift of food to someone who is hungry or a word of encouragement to someone who is feeling down. Help us to be an example that Christmas is not all about too much food, drink and presents, but showing love and care to those around us.

O Lord of Advent – in this ever-changing world we thank You that Your love for us is constant. Thank You that we can come to You in prayer and bring before You those who need Your healing touch. We lift before You the many needs of those on our prayer list. And in the quietness of our hearts, we pray for those who we know need Your healing touch today. We ask for You to come close to those who have recently suffered the loss of a loved one – as they grieve may they know the comfort of Your Holy Spirit. We especially think of the family of Patrick who died this week. We will miss his cheery face and cheeky smile. Thank you that as Christians we know that death is not the end but the beginning of a new life with You.

O Lord of Advent – as we approach the end of 2024, we lift our church of Christ The King up to You as it enters a new year. We give thanks for all the blessings that You have given us this year – a full year with a full-time minister in Steve and his lovely family; a growing congregation, growing both in number and faith; a new and exciting vision for the years ahead. Thank You Lord for this lovely church family of Christ The King.

Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
