Intercessions
2nd February 2025
Heavenly Father - on this Candlemas Sunday we come before you in prayer with thanks in our hearts as we remember the day that baby Jesus was presented in the temple and his life dedicated to God. Thank you for Simeon who recognised your son Jesus as the Saviour of the world – “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel”. May Christ be the light and salvation in our lives and the life of Christ The King Church. Help this light to shine in our everyday lives and your glory be seen in what we do and say. In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer we pray for the Anglican Church in Aotearoa NZ & Polynesia. May their ministers and congregations be beacons of light in their local communities leading people to faith in Christ and enabling God’s name to be glorified.

Lord of Light - we pray for our world and all the different nations in it. We marvel at the wonderful range and diversity of people, traditions and cultures. But there are many areas of darkness in our world – poverty, famine, war, greed, aggression and injustice. We pray for you to raise up leaders who can govern with grace and humility and enable your light to shine in places of darkness and despair. Help us all to work together for a fairer world for everyone. For when we help each other we are doing so in your name and for your glory. When we forgive those who have wronged us, we are echoing the forgiveness that you give us, for you judge with infinite mercy and love.

Lord of Light, God of healing – we pray for you to pour out your Holy Spirit on those who we know are in need of healing for you alone can heal hearts and bodies, minds, and spirits. We ask you to lay your healing hand on our loved ones. We ask for the healing of illness, physical weakness, and of broken hearts and spirits. Your unfailing love binds all wounds, and your unending love is available to everyone.

Lord of Light, God of comfort – on Wednesday we celebrated the life of Maurice Walton and we pray for his family and friends as they mourn his passing, but have the comfort of knowing he is now with you in heaven. But not all families are able to see or have the assurance that you have overcome death through your glorious resurrection; that you have the power to turn sorrow to joy and death to life. We ask you to comfort all families as they mourn and go through times of darkness. Strengthen them with your love and comfort them with your Holy Spirit.

Lord of Light – we pray for ourselves and for our church in this coming week. We ask you to bless all our various activities and to keep us safe on our travels. May your light shine through us as we go about our daily lives that your infinite love and grace may be reflected in what we say and do – that we may be beacons in our local communities – that they will see you in us and want to know more about You and the abundance of life you bring.
Merciful Father,
accept these prayers
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
